Olympic Coach Jim Bemiller

Mr. James Bemiller teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in sport law and sport governance in Sport Management at The University of Tennessee. His primary legal research interests include negligence and risk management is sport settings, gender equity, and constitutional issues in sport. He has also presented and published regarding the development of elite athletes. He earned his B.S. Ed. from Miami University in 1985, and M.S. Ed (1987) and Jurisprudence Doctorate (1993) from The University of Tennessee. He also serves on the U.S. Pole Vault Development Staff and has spoken extensively on the development of athletes in the pole vault.

Jim began his coaching career as an assistant football and track coach in Mansfield Ohio at Malabar High School. He then coached the pole vault at The University of Tennessee from 1986-2005. He is the coach of the 2004 Olympic champion in the pole vault, Timothy Mack, and has coached athletes in the pole vault who have won 5 NCAA Championships, 15 Southeastern Conference Championships and 28 All America Certificates. His athletes in the pole vault have broken the SEC, American Junior, NCAA, American, World Athletic Final and Olympic records. UT Alumni won the pole vault at three consecutive U.S. Olympic Trials. (’96, ’00, and ’04) and won Gold (2004) and Silver (2000) Olympic Medals.

Jim was a 4 year letterman in the pole vault at Miami University and was the Mid American Conference Champion and team captain in 1985. He was inducted into the Mansfield City Schools Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of NASSM, The Sport Lawyers Association, and the Knoxville Bar Association. Jim also serves as the faculty advisor of the Sport Management Partners in Sports Program.

He is married to UT Olympian and Lady Vol Hall of Fame member Missy Kane and is the proud father of fourteen-year old Gracie and former Lady Vol distance runner, Kelsey.
